The five elements (Wu Xing)

Five phases of change rotating across the 60-year cycle. Each holds for two consecutive years — one yang, one yin — before passing to the next. The element modifies the animal\'s temperament without replacing it.

Wood (木)

Growth, springtime, upward movement, fresh starts.

What it adds

A Wood year softens the animal toward growth and idealism — a stronger pull toward learning, expansion, and beginning new things. Wood-born tend to be teachers, planners, and gardeners of opportunity.

What it tempers

Sharp edges in the animal's temperament soften under Wood; sometimes too much, with decisions delayed in the hope conditions improve.

Fire (火)

Passion, summertime, outward radiance, transformation.

What it adds

A Fire year amplifies presence — charisma, expression, and the willingness to be seen. Fire-born tend to be communicators, performers, and people who pull others into motion.

What it tempers

Fire can burn through the animal's patience; some Fire-born find rest difficult and need to learn to dim without disappearing.

Earth (土)

Stability, late summer, centering, nourishment.

What it adds

An Earth year grounds the animal — pragmatism, follow-through, and care for the people in front of them. Earth-born tend to be the ones holding the group together quietly.

What it tempers

Earth can slow the animal's native flair; Earth-born sometimes mistake caution for wisdom, and need permission to risk something.

Metal (金)

Clarity, autumn, refinement, cutting away what is not needed.

What it adds

A Metal year sharpens the animal — precision, discipline, and a clear sense of standards. Metal-born tend to be the ones who name the unspoken decision in the room.

What it tempers

Metal can cool the animal's warmth; Metal-born sometimes seem distant when they are simply thinking — naming the warmth aloud takes practice.

Water (水)

Depth, winter, intuition, flow around obstacles.

What it adds

A Water year deepens the animal — intuition, adaptability, and a quiet persistence that wears down what force could not move. Water-born tend to be listeners, strategists, and people others bring problems to.

What it tempers

Water can pull the animal inward; Water-born sometimes hold so much it shows only as fatigue, and need a way to let things move through them, not stay.

Chinese zodiac — questions

What the calculation does, how the lunar cutoff works, and what your animal actually tells you.

What is the Chinese zodiac?

A traditional 60-year cycle pairing 12 animals (Rat through Pig) with 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and yin/yang polarity. Each lunar year corresponds to one animal-element-polarity combination, so the same animal repeats every 12 years but with a different element each time. The full cycle takes 60 years to repeat.

Why does the date of Chinese New Year change every year?

The Chinese calendar is lunisolar — it tracks both the moon and the sun. Chinese New Year falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, which lands anywhere between January 21 and February 20 depending on the year. Calculators that approximate the cutoff (e.g. "always January 21") get the wrong answer for ~30% of January and February birthdays. We use the documented Hong Kong Observatory dates 1900–2100, never approximated.

Why am I a different animal than I expected?

The most common reason: you were born in January or early February, before that year's Chinese New Year. If so, you belong to the previous lunar year. For example, anyone born January 1–24, 2020 is still a Pig (lunar year 2019), not a Rat. Calculators that use Gregorian year alone get this wrong; we use the actual CNY date.

What is the difference between yin and yang in the zodiac?

Yin and yang are paired polarities — receptive vs assertive, dark vs light, inward vs outward. Each animal is fixed to one polarity (Rat is always yang, Ox is always yin, alternating around the cycle). The polarity colours how the animal's temperament expresses itself, not whether the animal is "good" or "bad" — both poles are necessary and complementary.

What are the five elements (Wu Xing)?

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — five phases of change in classical Chinese cosmology. Each lunar year is associated with one of them, rotating every two years (one yang year, one yin year per element). The element modifies the animal: a Wood Tiger leans toward growth and idealism, a Metal Tiger leans toward discipline and precision.

Is Chinese zodiac accurate enough to be useful?

It is offered here as a reflective language for thinking about temperament — not as an empirical predictor of fate. Treat the result as one lens among many. The specific traditional associations (e.g. "Tigers are bold leaders") describe tendencies that show up often in the tradition, not laws of personality.

Do you store my birth date?

No. The entire calculation happens in your browser. Your date is never sent to our servers, never logged, and never included in a URL. You can verify this by viewing the page source or opening your browser developer tools.

What is the range of years your calculator covers?

1900 through 2100. The lunar new year table embedded in the calculator covers exactly that range, sourced from Hong Kong Observatory historical records and projected astronomical calculations. Outside this range, the calculator returns an error rather than approximate.
