Summary
We've designed Explain Fate to collect as little personal data as possible. Concretely:
- Birth dates never leave your browser. Every calculator on this site computes its result client-side. Your DOB is never transmitted to our servers, never logged, and never included in URLs.
- We do not set tracking cookies. Our analytics provider (Cloudflare Web Analytics) is cookieless and does not identify individual visitors.
- Email signups are optional. We only collect your email address if you actively subscribe to our newsletter, and you can unsubscribe with one click at any time.
What information we collect
Information collected automatically
When you visit Explain Fate, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) and our analytics provider (Cloudflare Web Analytics) automatically receive standard web-server information including:
- The page you requested and the HTTP referrer
- Approximate location (country / region), inferred from your IP address
- Your browser type, operating system, and screen resolution
- Aggregated performance metrics (Core Web Vitals)
Cloudflare Web Analytics is cookieless and does not use any persistent identifier. It does not store your full IP address. We use this data to understand which pages are popular, identify performance regressions, and decide what to build next.
Information you provide
You may choose to provide your email address by subscribing to our newsletter. We use this only to send the newsletter content you signed up for. We do not sell, rent, or share your email address with third parties.
You may enter information into our calculators — most commonly your date of
birth, and optionally your birth time and location for chart-based tools. This
information is processed in your browser only. It is not transmitted to
our servers, never logged, and never stored on our infrastructure.
Calculator inputs may be stored in your browser's localStorage so
you can resume a reading on your next visit; this data lives only on your device
and you can clear it from your browser settings at any time.
Cookies
At present, Explain Fate sets no first-party tracking cookies. Our analytics is cookieless. We may set strictly-necessary cookies in the future (for example, to remember your dark/light mode preference); when we do, we will update this section.
When we begin displaying advertising (through a network such as Ezoic or Mediavine) those networks will set cookies. At that point we will also display a cookie consent banner that complies with GDPR, the ePrivacy Directive, and UK PECR. We have not yet enabled advertising, so no such cookies are set today.
Affiliate links
When you click an affiliate link on Explain Fate (for example, a link to Keen, Amazon, or Sage Goddess), the partner site may set its own cookies and may share aggregated conversion data with us so we can understand which content drives subscriptions or purchases. We never receive your name, email, payment details, or any other personal data from these partners.
Third-party services we use
- Cloudflare — CDN, DNS, and Web Analytics. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- Buttondown — newsletter delivery (only if you subscribe). See Buttondown's privacy policy.
Your rights — EU / UK (GDPR)
If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Rectify inaccurate or incomplete data
- Erase your personal data ("right to be forgotten")
- Restrict or object to processing
- Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format
- Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent
- Lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority
Because we collect so little data (a newsletter email address, at most), most requests are satisfied by unsubscribing from the newsletter, which removes your email from our systems immediately.
Your rights — California (CCPA / CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
- Know what personal information we collect about you
- Delete personal information we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate personal information
- Opt out of sale or sharing of your personal information
- Be free from retaliation for exercising any of these rights
We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, and we do not have any "Do Not Sell" obligations to honour beyond the position we already take.
Children
Explain Fate is intended for users aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (United States) or under 16 (European Union). If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Data retention
Newsletter subscribers' email addresses are retained until you unsubscribe. Aggregated, anonymous analytics data is retained for up to 12 months. We do not retain individual calculator inputs because they never reach our servers.
Contact
For any privacy question, data-subject request, or correction, please email us at privacy@explainfate.com.
Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when we add new third-party services (most notably, when we begin displaying advertising). The "Last reviewed" date at the top will reflect the most recent substantive change. Significant changes will also be announced in our newsletter.
